Leather Care
How do I maintain my leather products?
With proper care, leather can develop a beautiful patina and last for many years. To keep your leather product looking and feeling its best:
- Keep it away from excessive moisture, heat and prolonged direct sunlight.
- Wipe away dust and dirt gently with a soft, dry cloth.
- Apply a small amount of leather balm, wax or conditioner when the leather starts to feel dry.
- Always test any leather care product on a small, inconspicuous area first, as some products can darken or slightly change the appearance of the leather.
For natural vegetable-tanned leather: Expect the leather to naturally darken and develop a richer patina over time with exposure to light and use. This is a natural part of the ageing process.
Less is more: Avoid over-conditioning your leather, as excessive oils or conditioners can soften the leather too much or leave it greasy.
Can I remove a stain from my item?
Stains on leather can sometimes be reduced or removed, but the result depends on the type of stain, the leather, and how long the stain has been there. Do not use household cleaners or solvents, as they may damage or discolour the leather.
For light surface stains, gently wipe the area with a clean, slightly damp cloth. For more stubborn stains, use a leather cleaner suitable for your type of leather and always test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.
For oil or grease stains: Blot fresh oil gently with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. For more persistent oil stains, an oil and grease stain absorber or leather oil extractor may help draw the oil out of the leather. Follow the product instructions carefully and test on an inconspicuous area first.
Please note that oil can penetrate deeply into leather, particularly vegetable-tanned leather, and may leave a permanent darker mark. Complete removal cannot always be guaranteed.
What are the common mistakes people make?
- Using baby wipes
- Using cooking oil or olive oil
- Over-conditioning
- Storing in humid places
